It wasn’t only the Romans who sent their envoys to us, we sent ours to them as well. Their job was to travel from time to time, either to Rome or to Constantinople, to negotiate peace. Our envoys would bring horses and other precious gifts and would return even more laden, with gold and fabulous jewels, which were then only worn by our leaders and their families. One of my father’s brothers was part of the retinue of Edekon, the envoy sent by Attila to Theodosius, the emperor of Constantinople. The whole family was very proud of him!
I’ve already told you that men often went to battle beyond the Istros, against the eastern Romans. Not only did they return with rich spoils, but they managed to frighten the Romans so much that they would pay anything to be left in peace. As my father used to say, no one has their purse as wide open as the emperor from Constantinople!
