21. The Sarcophagus of Gábor Haller and His Wife, Ilona Bocskai, Haller Castle, Albești (Mureș County), 1608

Gábor Haller was born in 1558 in Sibiu and was a prominent member of the transylvanian noble elite, holding several important administrative positions throughout his distinguished career. In 1586, he married Ilona Bocskai, the sister of István Bocskai. In 1594, he became the count of Târnava County, and following the election of Prince István Bocskai, Haller became his advisor and treasurer.

Initially, his sarcophagus was located in Haller Castle in Albești. Following the events of the 1848 revolution, it was transported to the local Reformed Church, where it was placed in the center of the church, in front of the pulpit. Compared to figurative sarcophagi, this funeral monument is relatively simple, adorned only with the heraldic symbols of the two deceased, funeral inscriptions, and various stylized vegetal ornaments.
