25. Commemorative Brick Inscription, Goganvarolea (Mureș County), Reformed Church, Late 14th Century

The inscription, incised into brick before firing in Gothic majuscules, is one of the earliest medieval commemorative inscriptions in Transylvania. It refers to the construction of the village church, built near the royal fortress of Goganvarolea. The inscription on the slab reads as follows:

"ISTA ECCLESI/ A EST FABRI(C)/ ATA IN HONO(R)/ E B(ea)TE VIRG[ini] | ST(.) MQGR(…)M | V[…] […] VMO […]."
