31. Vir Dolorum, Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Calvaria Church), Cluj-Mănăștur (Cluj-Napoca), 18th Century

The statue represents the iconographic type of the Scourged Jesus, in a typical position with the torso slightly inclined, head bowed onto the chest, and long, slightly curly hair partially covering the disfigured face. The statue depicts a mature body with well-developed muscles, covered with multiple bloody wounds caused by scourging. The few remaining fragments of the face, framed by a beard and mustache, also suggest the sufferings of martyrdom. The faithful rendering of the body, the plastic folds of the garment covering the waist, and other sculptural details place the statue of Vir Dolorum among the most remarkable examples of 18th-century Baroque sculpture in Cluj.
