Funerary stele; place of discovery: Gilău (Cluj County); 3rd century AD.

Profiled funerary stele. The relief field depicts the funeral banquet scene. On the kline, we see the depictions of four male characters, probably a man and three boys, each holding a cup. Symmetrically, on either side of a mensa tripes, are two cathedrae, on which two figures can be seen. On the left, there is the image of a woman holding a rython that has a human head. On the right cathedra, the image of another woman is visible, this one holding a cup in her left hand. In the space intended for the depiction, the craftsman decided, probably at the suggestion of the commissioner, to introduce a servant. His size is normal, but as he cannot fit anywhere in the register, he is only shown as a bust, holding a jug in his left hand. The craftsman omitted to engrave the feet of the kliné. The original red colour of the piece is preserved.

The stela belonged to Aurelius Carinus, cornicularius in Ala Siliana, and was ordered by his wife. The corniculars performed bureaucratic duties, working in the staff of the troop commander.

The verb posuit is repeated in the ending phrase characteristic for funerary monuments, B M P, b(ene) m(erenti) p(osuit).
