Votive relief dedicated to the goddess Juno; place of discovery: Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa (Sarmizegetusa, Hunedoara County); 2nd-3rd century AD.

Votive plaque with relief and inscription. In the lower part of the piece, below the field of the inscription, two ears are depicted, the so-called ‘divine ears’, symbolizing the listening divinity. The inscription occupies the upper part of the piece in three lines, with a fourth line at the bottom of the border. The dedication is to Iuno Regina by Marcia Cara. The goddess’ epithet is misspelled Regini, instead of Reginae. The graphic confusion can be explained by the formal attraction exerted by the noun Iunoni, written earlier, but also by the fact that -ae and -e were pronounced similarly, and there was a timbre error between the vowels e and i.

Inscription: Iunoni Re/gini (!) Mar/cia Cara / v(otum) s(olvit) l(ibens) m(erito)
